Home Assistant

Runsten’s integration for Home Assistant shows each of your cars as a device, with the same entities whatever the brand: battery, range, charging, odometer, doors, windows, locks, temperatures and position. It reads your account on Runsten, never your car: it does not count against the car’s quotas, and there is nothing to open on your network.

It works on every plan. Free reads your car once an hour, so its values change in Home Assistant once an hour; Plus reads it in real time, every minute while driving or charging.

Install it

You need Home Assistant 2025.8 or later.

  1. In Home Assistant, open the Marketplace (Home Assistant 2026.11 and later) or HACS, add https://github.com/runsten-app/runsten-homeassistant as a custom repository of type Integration, then install Runsten.
  2. Restart Home Assistant.

Without HACS, copy the folder custom_components/runsten of the repository into your configuration’s custom_components folder, then restart.

Connect it

  1. In Home Assistant: Settings, Devices & services, Add integration, Runsten.
  2. Choose Sign in with Runsten. Runsten opens in your browser: sign in if needed, check what Home Assistant will read, then Allow.
  3. You come back to Home Assistant through My Home Assistant, which asks once for your instance’s address.

Each car becomes a device, named as in Runsten. Home Assistant then appears in Runsten under Settings, Connected apps. It stays connected as long as it reads your account at least once every 30 days.

With an access token

Choose Use an access token instead, for a Home Assistant that cannot go through My Home Assistant:

  1. In Runsten, Settings, API access, New access token. Copy the token: it starts with rst_ and is not shown again.
  2. Paste it in Home Assistant.

What you get

In Home Assistant
Battery, range, charge limit, odometersensors, in % and km
Charging status, charge type, charging powersensors
Plug, charging, enginebinary sensors
Lock, doors, hood, tailgate, windows, sunroofbinary sensors, each one the car tells
Outside and cabin temperature, climate, battery heaterfor a car that tells them (Tesla)
Credentiala problem when the car’s credential (Polestar, Tesla) is refused or removed
Locationa device tracker, which you can turn off

A value Runsten does not know is shown as unknown, never as zero. While Runsten does not answer, the entities are unavailable.

Home Assistant reads; it does not send commands to the car. A Tesla’s controls are on its page in Runsten, with Plus.

Privacy

Your cars’ data, their position included, go from Runsten to your Home Assistant only. To leave the position out, open the integration’s Configure and turn off the vehicles’ position: the trackers are removed.

Disconnect it

In Runsten, Settings, Connected apps, then Disconnect next to Home Assistant: it loses access at once. For a token, Revoke it in API access. Then remove the integration in Home Assistant: what it has already received is erased with it.

With MQTT

With Plus, Runsten can also publish your cars to your own MQTT broker, with Home Assistant’s discovery: see Home Assistant and MQTT. Both give the same cars as two separate devices: keep only one of them.
