Connect an AI assistant

With Plus, an AI assistant can read what Runsten keeps about your cars and answer your questions about it, in your words. Runsten hosted serves it through MCP, the protocol these assistants use to reach other services.

Not available yet

Runsten is in development: my.runsten.app does not open yet. This is how it will work.

What to ask

  • How much did charging cost me last month, at home and elsewhere?
  • What was my consumption in January, compared with June?
  • Which trips used the most energy this summer?
  • How has my battery's capacity changed over the past year?
  • How much does the car lose while parked?

The assistant finds the figures itself, in your trips, charges and statistics.

Before you start

  • Plus, or its 14-day trial: see the pricing. On Free, the assistant connects but each question gets an answer pointing to Plus.
  • Claude Code or Cursor. Claude.ai and ChatGPT are coming later.
  • A personal access token, which the assistant sends in place of your password.

Create a token

  1. In Runsten, open Settings, then API access.
  2. New access token: name it after the assistant, such as “Claude Code”, and choose when it expires.
  3. Create the token, and copy it: it starts with rst_ and is not shown again.

Anyone who has the token can read your data: keep it as you would a password.

Claude Code

In a terminal, replace rst_… with your token:

sh
claude mcp add --transport http runsten https://my.runsten.app/api/mcp \
  --header "Authorization: Bearer rst_…"

Runsten is then available in the current project; add --scope user to have it in all your projects. In Claude Code, /mcp shows it connected.

Cursor

Add Runsten to ~/.cursor/mcp.json, for all your projects, or to a project's .cursor/mcp.json:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "runsten": {
      "url": "https://my.runsten.app/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer rst_…"
      }
    }
  }
}

In a project's file, keep the token out of the repository: write "Bearer ${env:RUNSTEN_TOKEN}" and set RUNSTEN_TOKEN in your environment.

What the assistant reads

  • Your cars: model and variant, the latest readings (state of charge, range, odometer, charging), the battery's health.
  • Your trips and charges: times, distance, energy, consumption, state of charge, cost, and the places by their name and address.
  • Your statistics, by day, week or month, and your places: their name and tariff.

And what it does not:

  • No position. The coordinates of your trips, charges, places and car are removed from every answer: only place names and addresses remain.
  • Nothing is changed. The assistant only reads: it cannot edit, delete, or act on the car. It reads what Runsten has recorded, without contacting the car.
  • What you see, no more. It reads your account as you do in Runsten.

What it reads is sent to the assistant's provider (Anthropic for Claude, the provider of the model you chose in Cursor), under that provider's terms, when you ask. Runsten records each call, which tool and when, never what was asked or answered.

Revoke the token

In Runsten, Settings, API access, Revoke next to the token: the assistant loses access at once. Then remove Runsten from the assistant: claude mcp remove runsten, or its entry in mcp.json.
